Steven Moffat is bringing his storytelling expertise to Channel 4 with a new comedy-drama that promises to reveal the secrets behind Britain's most famous political address. The Sherlock and Doctor Who creator has developed "Number 10", a series set entirely within Downing Street that will explore life inside the iconic building.

The show will follow an ensemble cast ranging from the Prime Minister to a conspiracy theorist running the basement café. The series synopsis describes the setting with "There's a Prime Minister in the attic, a coffee bar in the basement, and a wallpapered labyrinth of romance, crisis and heartbreak in-between."

The creator promises a unique political perspective where viewers will never know which party holds power. "The government will be fictional, but the problems will be real. We'll never know which party is in power, because once the whole world hits the fan it barely matters," Moffat explained.

Creator's ambitious vision

Moffat outlined his comprehensive scope for the series, covering every corner of the famous building. "This is a show about the building and everyone inside. Not just the Prime Minister upstairs, but the conspiracy theorist who runs the cafe three floors below, the man who repairs the lift that never works, the madly ambitious 'advisors' fighting for office space in cupboards. Oh, and of course, the cat," he revealed.

He described the unique setting as taking place in "the only terrace house in history with mice and a nuclear deterrent" and "the only knock-through in the world where a hangover can start a war". Moffat called it "all of Britain in a house" and "British history under one roof".

The creator teased the project on social media platform X, describing it playfully in relation to his previous work. "It's basically Press Gang in Downing Street. Or Doctor Who with funnier monsters. Or Sherlock with a fairly similar door. But really it's Press Gang in Downing Street," he wrote.

Completing the famous doors trilogy

The series represents Moffat's completion of what he calls the "three famous doors" concept. Executive producer Sue Vertue explained the significance: "He says there are three famous doors in the world; he's done 221B Baker Street and the TARDIS - now he's going to do the real one."

Channel 4's Acting Head of Drama Gwawr Lloyd expressed enthusiasm for the ambitious project. "We're thrilled to be bringing Number 10 to Channel 4, a bold, brilliant and witty new drama from the exceptional mind of Steven Moffat and the powerhouse team at Hartswood Films," she said.

Industry backing and production details

Hartswood Films is producing the series with Sue Vertue serving as executive producer alongside Moffat. The production team described the project as a passion project for the acclaimed writer.

Lloyd outlined the show's unique approach to political drama. "Number 10 will offer a rare glimpse behind the doors of the world's most iconic political residences which will take viewers from the high-stakes decisions of leadership to the lives of the staff who keep the house running," she explained.

The series has generated positive fan reactions on social media, with enthusiastic responses including "Anything by you is a winner" and "Looking forward to it!!!" The show is set to begin filming soon and will air on Channel 4 in the near future.
